INDIAN CLASSICAL DANCES & FAMOUS PERSONALITIES

Indian dances can be divided into classical,folk,and modern types. The Classical tradition is at least 2000 years old. India evolved a type of classical dance drama that combine movement , gesture, singing,music,and costumes.India has seven Classical Dances.

1.Kathakali:- 

• It is a classical dance form of Kerala. The word kathakali literally means" Story-Play". kathakali is known for its heavy elaborate make-up and costumes. In fact, the colorful and fascinating costumes of kathakali have become the most recognized icon of kerala. During the drama the dancers do not speak. The hand movements and mime are so varied as to constitute a complete sign language.                                                                        Famous Personalities: Ballthol Narayan Menon, Krishnan Kutti,Madhavan,Anand Shivraman, Uday Shankar, ramgopal, Mrinally Sarabhai, Shantarao,Rukmani Devi, Mathur Govindan Kutti 

2.Odissi:-

•  It is a famous dance of Odisha, it is considered to be over 2000 years old.It was initially developed in the temples. Many of the dance poses are sculpted on the exterior of the temples in Odisha.                                    Famous Personalities:-Indrani Rehman ,Sonal Mansingh, Kalicharan Patnayak,Kalichand,Ranjana Denials,Minati Das,Priyanvada Mohanti,Kiran Sahgal,Kelucharan Mahapatra, Durgacharan Ranveer,Madhvi Mugdal,Sanyukta Panigrahi,Mayadhar Raut

3.Manipuri:

• Manipuri dance originated in North-eastern state of Manipur. It is characterized by a variety of forms that are linked to folk Tradition and ritual. The most striking part of Manipuri dance is its colorful decoration, lightness of dancing foot,delicacy of abhinaya (drama),lilting music & poetic charm.                       Famous Personalities:Late Shantiwardhan, Jhaveri Sisters, Reeta Devi, Savita Mehta, Nirmala Mehta, Thambal Yama, Singhjeet (The Master of this Dance), K.Radhamohan Sharma.

4.Kathak:-

• It is a classical dance of North India, subtle dance that emphasizes footwork and speed.Kathak is said to be derived from the word Katha meaning "the art of storytelling". In ancient India, There were kathakars or bards who used to recite religious & mythological tales  of music,mime & dances                                  Famous Personalities:Malvika Sarkar, Sitara Devi, Gopikrishna , Damayanti Joshi, Kumudni Lakhiya, Uma sharma, bharti Gupta, Malvika Mitra, Birju Maharaj, Shobhna narayan, Chandralekha, Lacchu Maharaj, Theerathram Azad.

5.Mohiniattam:-  

• It is a Classical dance originated from Kerala. Mohiniattam dance form a beautiful female style with surging flow of body movement. Mohiniattam dance in Kerala developed in the tradition of Developed system.which later grew and developed a classical status.                                                                     Famous Personalities:- Bharti Shivaji, Baijantimala, K.kalyani Amma.
